Welcome to Chateau Tanlay

This historical chateau is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture there is in Burgundy today. Originally the family domain of the one of the most famous and prestigious Protestant families in France, Admiral Coligny, playing a strategic role during the French Religious wars. The chateau was later majestically transformed, as we see it today, by then the new owner , Michel Particelli d'Hemery, Superintendent of Finance of Mazarin during the prominent period of Catherine de Medicis. In 1704 ownership passed onto the hands of the Marquis Tanlay . Since 1704 Chateau Tanlay has remained in the same family passing onto its dependants today. The chateau is still respected as a family property and the family descendents still live here today. 

Chateau Tanlay is specifically famous for the gallery, the ballroom with the walls and ceilings adorned by the unique trompe l'oeil frescoes and also the Tower of the League where conspirators planned the downfall of the power of France with its famous mural paintings telling it own story. The chateau offers fixed times guided tours of TANLAY’s interior, historically rich in furniture and wall decoration.

The exterior and surrounding grounds you may visit at your own will and pace, discover the stables, the moat, the water nymphs. Take a promenade under an alley of hundred year old trees towards the prospective at the end. Wonder around the park, sit under the trees as time will quickly becomes irrelevant. Each summer, the outbuildings within the property are used for Contemporary art exhibitions of International reputation.
